For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you. (Ephesians 1:15-16)
One of my favorite mentors ends every email with the same phrase: “I thank God for you.” I still remember the first time I received one of his emails and the elation I felt that someone thought I was worth giving thanks for.
We all need the encouragement of knowing that somewhere, someone is giving thanks for us. For in that act alone they are extending God’s grace to us by suggesting that how we live our lives is somehow worthy of praise.
Paul is doing the same for his church in Ephesus. The piece of how they are living their lives that he lifts up is their faith in Christ and love for all God’s people. In fact, the church in Ephesus are fulfilling their highest calling as followers of Christ. They are doing precisely what Jesus himself commanded: loving God and loving their neighbor. That is certainly something worth celebrating.
Though times have changed, we still have the same calling and command from Christ. My encouragement for all of us is that we always have the opportunity to do better, to be better, to love better. And know that I am giving thanks for all of you because in even thinking of how you might love more, you are worthy of praise. So, I thank God for you!
